"Extreme adventure sports have been captured many times, but what makes this race so unique is the world's best sailors will take on the unforgiving oceans alone," said Keoghan.
"This is a fantastic opportunity to share a physical and mental challenge that will test competitors beyond what seems humanly possible and at the same time highlight the planet's awe inspiring oceans."
The announcement of Keoghan's involvement was made by Exodus Film Group, which secured the North American rights to the reality project and is shopping the reality series to American networks.
"I am extremely excited about this project and having Phil Keoghan signed on as a partner to share this human drama with the U.S. audience," said Exodus Film Group CEO John Eraklis.
"Phil's adventurous spirit and experience as an entertainer will help capture the true personalities of these adventure athletes on and off the water and the challenges they face in circling the planet globe alone."
The Velux 5 Oceans, which takes place over the course of nine months, will be documented for the reality series by those competing in it -- who will film the footage themselves while participating in the race on their Eco 60 racing yachts.
The series will also feature footage captured at the race's start, finish and at various ports -- including Wellington, New Zealand, Salvador, Brazil and Charleston, SC.
Brad Van Liew is the race's only U.S. entry and has vowed to complete the journey using no fossil fuels.
