All good things must come to an end, and that includes American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken's streak with the #1 single on the Nielsen SoundScan U.S. Singles Sales chart. E! Online reports that Hilary Duff's single "So Yesterday," which had narrowly been #2 in both of its first two weeks of release, bumped Clay's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" / "This Is The Night" out of the top slot for the week ended August 17, 2003.

During the last two weeks, both of Hilary Duff's successful 'tween-oriented' movies from this spring, Agent Cody Banks and The Lizzie McGuire Movie, were released on DVD, and the latter contained both an extensive plug for her new CD (which includes "So Yesterday") and a coupon for her last one (the soundtrack to The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which bounded back to 10th place among CDs). These DVDs may have the impetus for the talented 15-year-old Ms. Duff to finally reach the top. Or it may have been the blackout, which impacted both sales and SoundScan's data collection. Or it may just have been time for a change, since Clay's single has already sold over a million copies. Whatever the reason, we congratulate Clay for his #1 streak and Hilary Duff for ending it.
