Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell have had over a year to get to know each other since getting engaged, and according to the former Bachelor, time has made a world of difference.

"I still want to marry Lauren, very much so," Ben, 29, told People in a recent interview.

The couple's late 2016 reality show Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After? featured Ben and his fiancee agreeing to marry in a television special for ABC, but once the bride-to-be got the ball rolling on wedding plans, an overwhelmed Ben got cold feet and eventually called the wedding off much to Lauren's dismay.

Ben felt getting married at the time would be rushing things, especially since they fell in love within a short period of time.

"[Planning a wedding] is difficult," admitted Ben, who has yet to reveal whether he's set a date with Lauren.

"We are definitely trying to. Us not planning a wedding yet has been actually something that has been really positive for us. It's freed up a lot of time. It's allowed us not to stress about the confines of planning a wedding and allowed us to get really excited about the idea of a wedding."

After all, Ben and Lauren had a whirlwind romance on The Bachelor's 20th season, which wrapped about a year ago. For months after the show's finale aired on ABC, the couple had do deal with the aftermath of Ben having told his runner-up JoJo Fletcher that he was also in love with her.

Lauren also had to relocate to Denver, CO, in order to live with Ben. While he resumed work as a software salesman, Lauren set out to find a career path that's right for her. (She eventually created a blog called Sparkle in her Eye).

"For a while we were really stressed with everything going on," Ben revealed.

"Planning a wedding on top of being really stressed was not a healthy place for us, but now as life has freed up and we're not as stressed, and we are enjoying life more and having more freedom, planning a wedding is just a really exciting thing for us."

Despite several months of plaguing rumors earlier this year that the couple was not getting along and on the verge of calling it quits on their romance, Ben told the magazine, "Our relationship is better now than it has ever been."

Ben and Lauren attempted to prove critics wrong by gushing about their love on social media on Valentine's Day as well as Ben's 29th birthday in March. The pair also just appeared on The Twins: Happily Ever After? spinoff starring Emily Ferguson and Haley Ferguson on Monday night.
