'Queer Eye" ratings soar on Bravo; NBC considers more rebroadcasts

It worked once, so why not try it again? Michael Starr in the NY Post reports that NBC is "definitely considering re-airing" episodes of the Bravo hit Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, in the face of record-breaking ratings for the cable show. The July 29 episode of the show on Bravo (which is owned by NBC) drew 2.8 million viewers, smashing the record for the most-watched show in Bravo history: the 1.6 million who watched the series premiere on July 15. The first episode then drew 6.7 million viewers to NBC when re-aired on the broadcast network on July 24.
David Lane becomes the third houseguest to be evicted from the 'Big Brother 4' house

After being nominated for eviction by Dana Varela, the third Head of Household, David Lane was evicted last night from the "Big Brother 4" house based on the votes of his fellow HouseGuests. David received more votes than fellow nominee Jack Owens. Nathan Marlow won the Power of Veto and chose to remove Alison Irwin from the block which forced Dana to nominate David in her place.
'For Love Or Money 2' star Erin Brodie plans move to L.A. to pursue show biz

Does Erin Brodie, the winner of NBC's first For Love Or Money, who threw a check for about $465,000 into the fire for a chance to double her money (or meet her real soulmate) in For Love Or Money 2, find love at the end of the show? Or does she win the dough and dump her beau? Or does she walk away with nothing more than lint in her pockets? We don't know. Online reports that "Bridge Over Troubled Water" b/w "This Is The Night", the million-selling single from American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken, clung to first place on the U.S. Nielsen SoundScan charts for an eighth straight week in today's Top Singles Sales chart. Aiken's single, which was just certified platinum by the RIAA, beat out Korn's new single, "Did My Time," by a mere 600 copies sold.

'Survivor: Amazon' juror Christy Smith develops new PBS children's nature series

Christy Smith, who became known as the "Deaf Survivor" on her way to a sixth-place finish during Survivor: The Amazon, is currently working to develop a new series with Colorado PBS Television focused on sign language, natural surroundings and achievement ... in short, a children's version of Christy's time on Survivor, minus the closet nudists. According to Christy's website, the show, tentatively titled Christy's Kids: Challenge Yourself, will teach about "the environment, safety, and adventure" while also teaching signing "the same way Sesame Street teaches ABC's." Currently, Christy and PBS are soliciting sponsors to underwrite the production coats.

FOX has announced that "celebutante" Paris Hilton, one of the two stars of the network's upcoming fish-out-of-water "The Simple Life" reality series, will make her television acting debut when she guest stars on the season premiere episode of "That 70's Show" Tuesday, Oct. 29 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Hilton is scheduled to start production on the hit comedy series July 31.

According to Stuff.co.nz, a new New Zealand realty show seriously burned one of the contestants during its filming. At the time, the contestant was repeating a stunt -- walking through a wall of fire -- that he had already performed successfully, because the producers wanted to "get a better shot" of it. During the second try, the man's shirt caught fire, and he required skin-graft surgery on his upper body at a hospital in Auckland, NZ. A friend who visited him in the hospital described him as "a really unhappy customer."

Once again, "Survivor" producer Mark Burnett is being accused of staging a scene for his reality show -- only this time it doesn't involve "Survivor." According to Page Six, an angry NYC restaurateur is claimng that chef Rocco DiSpirito and financier Jeffrey Chodorow faked a scene the "Survivor" producer's new NBC "The Restaurant" reality show.

Ruben Studdard, the winner of Fox's second American Idol but a runner-up to fellow finalist Clay Aiken on the charts, became the fourth Idol recipient of a Record Industry Association of America ("RIAA") award. Ruben received a gold record, signifying 500,000 copies sold, for his debut single "Flying Without Wings" b/w "Superstar." According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite the fact that two new gay-themed shows headline its summer programming, the Bravo cable network says it is not intentionally trying to target gay viewers. The Chicago Sun Times reports that Liza Minnelli's marriage to producer-manager David Gest has apparently come to an end, as the couple have legally separated. As a result, the couple's lawsuit against VH1 over their failed reality series may also come to an end, now that the "very litigious" Gest will be removed from the equation.
'American Idol' winner Kelly Clarkson to appear on NBC series 'American Dreams'

Although her acting career may have had a disastrous start with the failure of her movie From Justin to Kelly, Kelly Clarkson, the winner of Fox's initial American Idol, will try acting again in a role more suited for her. According to the Associated Press, Kelly will appear in the second season premiere of the NBC series American Dreams in September, portraying the pre-Beatles country-pop star Brenda Lee. During her appearance, Kelly will sing one of Lee's many hits, "Sweet Nothin's."

On Tuesday, July 29, the remaining five comedians on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” will give their final performances before the viewers vote for whom they feel is the funniest and deserves the title of “Last Comic Standing.” Nearly six months after first performing at the Paris Hotel theater to determine the 10 comedians who moved into the “Comic House” in Los Angeles, California, the five remaining comedians will return to the theater to each perform a 5-minute routine. At the end of the show, viewers will vote by phone or internet for who they feel should be the “Last Comic Standing” and thereby win a talent deal with NBC, a special on Comedy Central and an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

The new hit Bravo series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” generated strong ratings results in a special Thursday telecast on the NBC network last night, retaining 86 percent of its 18-49 lead-in from television’s #2 comedy among adults 18-49, “Will & Grace.” Over the previous six weeks, NBC has averaged an 83 percent retention in that time period with a combination of “Will & Grace” and “Frasier.”

Fox may be keeping the plot twist and other details of Joe Millionaire 2 secret, but at least we now know when the secret will begin to be revealed. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Fox has announced that its new Monday night lineup, which consists of Joe 2 at 8 PM and the drama Skin at 9 PM, will debut this fall on October 20, a week ahead of most of the Fox lineup (but a month behind the Friday-night shows).

Ozzy Osbourne tour manager dies during 'Ozzfest' tour

Sharon Osbourne's brainchild, the 2003 Ozzfest tour, continues to attract attention to her husband Ozzy Osbourne for all the wrong reasons. First, Ozzy, perhaps overjoyed that MTV renewed his family's reality show The Osbournes for another season, missed concerts, claiming to be suffering from laryngitis. Then, when he returned to the tour, his performances were slammed by reviewers, such as this critic from the Akron Beacon-Journal who referred to him as "winded" and "uneven" and noted that his "age and years of abuse showed." Now comes news from the Detroit Free Press that the 54-year-old Ozzy's longtime tour manager, Bobby Thomson, died in his hotel room in suburban Detroit on Thursday night.

CBS denies 'Big Brother 4' houseguest Scott Weintraub was removed for STD instead of misbehavior

The St. Petersburg Times reports that, during last week's network press tour, CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves denied that Big Brother 4 houseguest Scott Weintraub was removed from the house (and the show) because of the fact that he had a previously-undisclosed sexually-transmitted disease, HPV (human papilloma virus, also known as genital warts). Instead, Moonves, like the show's producers, emphasized that Weintraub's temper tantrum was the reason for his removal.

TV Guide Online reports that CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves expressed doubt as to whether a fifth edition of the network's Emmy-nominated The Amazing Race series would be produced, due to the show's continuing low ratings. Over the summer, CBS gave the show the prized Thursday at 8 PM time slot -- the slot occupied by Survivor during the regular season and previously reserved for Big Brother during the summer. Nevertheless, ratings for The Amazing Race remain anemic.

The Austin (TX) American-Statesman reports that Survivor: The Amazon winner Jenna Morasca and her ally, fifth-place finisher Heidi Strobel, appeared at CBS's July 20 nighttime "star party" following the media preview for the 2003-04 season. The party was held at the trendy Lucky Strike Lanes in Hollywood, a 12-alley bowling center (and upscale restaurant/bar, of course). Among the other network stars and executives present to meet with the media were Judging Amy's Tyne Daly and JAG's David James Elliott.

When Bravo's upcoming "Boy Meet Boy" was first announced and the premise revealed, we were sure that gay rights groups would have rightfully been up in arms and protesting the staging of a "Bachelor"-like program in which a gay man is looking to select a partner from a group of 15 suitors that, unbeknownst to the eligible bachelor, contains numerous straight men who were paid by the program to pretend to be gay.

Since Survivor first aired on CBS in the summer of 2002, viewers have noted (and sometimes complained about) the continuing number of product placements in the show. Sponsoring products have been incorporated directly into the production, ranging from food rewards to computer "cafes" to SUVs for overnight sleeping. Now, with his new NBC show The Restaurant, Survivor executive producer Mark Burnett has carried that concept one step further.

TV Guide Online is reporting that Trista Rehn and her fireman fiancé Ryan Sutter "feel betrayed" over The Smoking Gun's public publication of the $1,000,000 contract they signed with ABC for the rights to air a four hour special of their wedding. "I don't care that people know the ins and outs of the contract," Ryan told TV Guide. "What bothers me is, someone was deceitful, dishonest and took advantage of us. We signed the contract and gave it to people who are working with us, so somebody sold us out." "I have no idea who it was," Ryan added mischievously, "but if I find out..."

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Boston Globe reports that David E. Kelley, creator of such past TV hits as L.A. Law, Picket Fences and Ally McBeal, took another shot at reality TV and the networks that air it during the recent Hollywood press tour. Said Kelley, whose ABC show The Practice was crushed in the ratings by Fox's Joe Millionaire and avoided cancellation only by dumping six of its top stars, "'Now, they put their trash on. . . . They celebrate the junk. As long as they can get high ratings, they will do it. Where once they were ashamed of it, now they'll throw a parade for themselves. And that's probably where my frustration has been growing.'' This isn't the first time Kelley has attacked reality television, in March he wrote an episode of The Practice in which a crazed woman abducted CBS President Les Moonves in an abssurd quest for a reality program of her own.

Amanda received more votes than fellow nominee Jee Choe. Dana Varela won the Power of Veto and chose to leave the nominations as they stood.

Fox's American Idol isn't the only reality TV show hitting the pop music charts any longer. Billboard reports that the debut CD of Buddy Jewell, the winner in the finale of USA Network's country-music reality series Nashville Star, sold 52,000 copies last week, good enough for 13th place in the Billboard Hot 200 CD charts. The CD, simply entitled Buddy Jewell and featuring Jewell's smash hit "Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey's Song)", also debuted at #1 on the Country CD chart.
MTV renews 'The Osbournes' for 2004 season

Since becoming international celebrities when the first season of their self-titled MTV shop became the hottest series in the history of cable TV, the Osbourne family of Beverly Hills, California has been involved in unending trouble. Father Ozzy, the former lead singer of Black Sabbath, was sued by two former bandmates whom he and his wife edited off his records to avoid paying them up to $20 million in court-ordered royalties. Mother Sharon (daughter of Jet Records founder and well-known nasty thug Don Arden) survived colon and lymph cancer and feuded and fought publicly over a raffle prize. Son Jack went through drug rehabilitation. Daughter Kelly was dropped by her dad's record label, prompting him to leave as well, after her debut record flopped. The family members were publicly blasted for their profanity-laden shtick and portrayed as clowns in the media. Oh, and the bottom fell out of their third-season ratings. Time to regroup in peace and quiet, right?

Colby Donaldson tentatively joins cast of 'All-Star Survivor'

The Arizona Republic reports that Survivor: The Australian Outback finalist Colby Donaldson has tentatively accepted a spot in the upcoming All-Star Survivor (also known as Survivor 8) series, which will be filmed in November and December 2003 and aired in Spring 2004. Colby thus would become the third Outback contestant added to the show, along with his final-two ally Tina Wesson and his sometime galpal Jerri Manthey.
'Survivor: Amazon' juror Heidi Strobel was hospitalized at end of shooting

The verdict is in: the Amazon is still a dangerous place, even when you have Mark Burnett and CBS to protect you. The Arizona Republic reports that Survivor: The Amazon contestant Heidi Strobel, who managed to reach the jury, became seriously ill at the end of the shooting session and required hospitalization when she returned to the United States. Heidi thus joined fellow contestant Daniel Lue, who came down with malaria, in the hospital wards upon returning.

Brandon Showalter kicked out of 'Big Brother 4' before show even begins

CBS has announced that the producers of "Big Brother 4" have made a casting change to the previously announced group of houseguests, increasing the "X Factor" from four couples to five couples. Previously announced houseguest Brandon Showalter has been replaced with a fifth ex who will be revealed along with the remaining four HouseGuests in the premiere episode on Tuesday, July 8 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
'American Idol' finalists Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard have CDs delayed until September

MTV reports that the upcoming full-length CDs from American Idol winner Ruben Studdard and runner-up Clay Aiken, both of which were scheduled to be released on August 19, have been delayed until September and will now be released at least a week apart.
CBS announces identities of 9 of 13 'Big Brother 4' contestants

This morning CBS revealed the identities of nine of the thirteen houseguests for "Big Brother 4" in anticipation of the reality series' premiere on Tuesday, July 8 at 8/9 PM, ET/PT. As was announced earlier this week, four of these people will have their exes joining them in the house as participating HouseGuests. None of the contestants knows about this "X Factor." The identities of the four remaining houseguests will be revealed in the premiere episode.
Clay Aiken falls from top spot on Billboard chart but remains top-selling single

The vague standards for the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart have finally caught up to American Idol finalist Clay Aiken. According to Billboard, Clay's CD single, "This Is The Night" b/w "Bridge Over Troubled Water" fell from first to third on the Hot 100 Singles this week, with Beyonce Knowles's "Crazy In Love" (which is not available as a CD single) taking over at #1. Clay's single retains the top spot on the Billboard/Nielsen SoundScan Hot 100 Singles Sales chart for the third week in a row, however.

According to updated in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, the 8PM July 1 telecast of “Dog Eat Dog” (3.0 rating, 11 share among adults 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall) beat Fox’s “American Juniors” in all key adult and adult-male categories, plus women 18-34 and women 25-54 (tie). However the program placed third in an extremely close overall numbers race, drawing a 4.7 rating and 9 share to FOX's "American Juniors" (4.9/9) and CBS' "JAG" (4.8/9).
Ratings: 'Last Comic Standing' wins timeslot, draws 7.9 million viewers overall

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Justin Guarini, runner-up in the original "American Idol" series, was ticketed by Grand Prairie police Saturday afternoon after witnesses said he almost ran over a young girl with a personal watercraft at a local lake. According to the report, Justin, along with "Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson and a half dozen or so of their friends, had been taking turns riding the watercraft for most of the day when police cited Justin for "unsafe boat operation" after the early evening incident. The offense is punishable by a fine of up to $2,000 and a maximum 180 days in jail.

According to preliminary “fast affiliate-based” in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, Tuesday, June 30th's 9-10 PM ET of the penultimate episode of “For Love Or Money” (3.9/11 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall) nearly matched its 4.0 adult 18-49 rating of the previous week, the highest result for any reality telecast on any network in the last 20 nights.
'American Idol' movie 'From Justin to Kelly' ends as bonafide flop

The final verdict is in, and it's not positive for the future acting careers of original American Idol finalists Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini. Their Fox movie From Justin to Kelly, which flopped on its opening weekend, has now become one of the year's biggest cinematic failures. The Associated Press reports that the second-weekend box-office totals for J2K place it merely 16th for the week, with a total box office of just $625,429 despite showing on 1969 screens.
New "tipster" for NBC's 'For Love Or Money' claims star of second show not Erin

The verdict is in, and the tip that Reality TV World received regarding the final two in NBC's For Love Or Money, which we reported here, has clearly proven to be incorrect. Kelly is not one of the final two; instead, the final two are Erin and hard-drinking Paige, who may make a good pair with drunken would-be-rapist Rob.
