Infamous 2005 "American Idol" reject Leroy Wells has reached a plea agreement in Mobile, Ala., and avoided a possible life in prison sentence.

Wells, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault instead of facing trial for attempted murder, the Mobile (Ala.) Register reported. He was sentenced to a year in jail with 10 years suspended.

Wells' incoherent, over-the-top "American Idol" audition became comic and Internet fodder, but by the time it aired last January, he was jailed for shooting a man in the buttocks. Those charges were dropped Monday because prosecutors were unable to find the victim, described as "an unreliable drug addict."

The attempted murder case stemmed from another shooting in June that slightly injured the victim, who agreed to the plea to a reduced offense, the newspaper said.

Wells, who was jailed Tuesday, was given credit for six months already spent in jail.
