Although it was a night of split decisions for the judging panel -- Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.-- several talented artists with memorable stories advanced to Hollywood.
Jessica Cabral, a 21-year-old worship music director from Worcester, MA, revealed her family had immigrated to the United States from Brazil. She opened the show with a performance of "Brand New Me" by Alicia Keys.
Jennifer told her that she has a "beautiful, thick, lush tone" of voice. Keith complimented her control, and not only did Harry call her beautiful and a "tremendous talent," he explained she's one of the best singers he's heard this season. Harry admitted he'd be shocked if she doesn't make it very far in the competition.
Kayce Haynes, a 23-year-old musician from Talladega, AL, revealed he's almost one-year sober after allowing drugs to basically take over his life. As part of his choice to turn over a new leaf, Kayce followed his dream and auditioned for American Idol.
Kayce sang "Brother" by Need to Breathe. Harry gave Kayce a huge compliment by insisting he sounded like a mix of Bon Jovi and Bono from U2. Jennifer said he sang with experience, and although Keith was sort of on the fence about him, Kayce made it to Hollywood.
Melany Huber, a 17-year-old from Livonia, MI, sang "Talking to the Moon" by Bruno Mars. Melany is in remission from cancer, as she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma five months before her audition. She has a whole new perspective on life now and is therefore going for the gold.
Jennifer told Melany she really "emoted" and delivered a lyric "so naturally." Keith said she was a good storyteller and had an easy presence about her. Harry liked everything he saw and heard, saying Melany "captivated" him.
Colette Lush, a 19-year-old nanny from Orange County, CA, performed "Who's Lovin You" by Jackson 5 for the judges. While Colette was singing, Jennifer whispered to Keith how she felt like Carrie Underwood had just walked into the room.
Jennifer eventually told Colette that she was born to sing and it seemed just so easy for her. Jennifer said she has the potential to do well in the competition. Keith didn't expect that voice to come out of her, and he noted it was "terrific" and she has "a timeless quality" about her. Harry pointed out she could make it all the way to the finish line.
American Idol's Hollywood Week begins next week.
