American Idol aficionados brace yourselves -- executive producer Nigel Lythgoe confirmed that he has approached Fox about a plan that would combine an Idol all-stars special with the sixth season's frequently mentioned but still undetailed songwriting competition.

"Let's see Constantine Maroulis again. Let's see Ace Young. Let's see Vonzell [Solomon] and Tamyra Gray and all the great people we voted for over the years. I'd love to do that and with good reason at the end of the day for doing it, which is to produce the song that the next American Idol's gonna sing."
However just because Lythgoe is sharing his idea with reporters doesn't mean it's going to happen. "I've pitched to Fox and they have yet to come back to me to say yes or no," Lythgoe added.
During the sixth season of Idol, producers are planning on holding a national songwriting competition open to both signed or unsigned songwriters, which would determine the original song heard by millions of Americans as they watch the Final 2 finalists perform when the show's sixth season ends in May.
