Animal Planet has announced it has ordered The Faroe Islands Project, a new Whale Wars spinoff which will follow the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as it attempts to stop The Grind, the annual pilot whale kill in the Faroe Islands.

The Faroe Islands Project will feature the Sea Shepherds and their operatives team and new technology working to stop the hunting of about 1,000 long-finned pilot whales that are gathered and killed by men in shallow coves of the Faroes. Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been regulated by Faroese authorities only on a community level, according to the network.
"For the last four years, Whale Wars has been riveting television because of the passion of the Sea Shepherds, the risks they take to save the lives of whales, and the magnificent and dangerous beauty of the Southern Ocean," Marjorie Kaplan, president of Animal Planet Media, said in a statement.
"Now they are once again preparing to put their lives on the line, this time in a lush and unfamiliar corner of northern Europe where the customs are different and the killing of whales continues. And we plan be there to document every moment."
The Faroe Islands Project's crew members will include Whale Wars cast members Paul Watson, Locky MacLean, Peter Hammarstedt, Chris Aultman and Fiona McCuaig, while the campaign will also feature the familiar vessels Steve Irwin and the Gojira -- which has recently been renamed Brigitte Bardot.
In addition, the new series will chronicle how the Sea Shepherds struggle to overcome a dispute with the Maltese Bluefin tuna fisherman, who seized and detained the Steve Irwin in the nearby Shetland Islands.
The Faroe Islands Project is being produced by The Lizard Trading Company for Animal Planet with Liz Bronstein and Lisa Lucas serving as executive producers.
