The Island will enable Grylls, a famous adventurer and survivalist, to discover whether a modern man can survive on a deserted island without the luxuries -- or even the basics -- of contemporary everyday life.
The six one-hour episodes of the show will star 14 American men being abandoned on an island with just the clothes on their backs and minimal survival tools.
"This experiment reveals, in a shocking way, whether modern man, when pushed, can still summon all the resolve, ingenuity and strength that traditionally made a man's man -- or whether our society's cushioning has meant we have lost those hard-earned skills of our ancestors," Grylls said in a statement.
"This is the raw, unfiltered and uncensored story of 14 men, as told exclusively by them."
The Island is based on the UK series with the same name on a Shine TV-produced channel. It won't have prizes, eliminations, winners, or camera teams. The entire series will be filmed by the men themselves as they experience life without restaurants, technology, or homes to live in. The men will be forced to hunt for food and a water source as well as build a shelter.
The 14 participants will include a stay-at-home dad, trauma surgeon, firefighter, and criminal defense attorney. The men will have something to prove to themselves and each other while testing their own physical, mental and emotional limits every day.
The two NBC reality shows Grylls had previously starred on were Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls and Running Wild with Bear Grylls.
Get Out Alive was a reality competition series filmed in New Zealand that premiered in July 2013. Running Wild debuted in July 2014 and featured Grylls taking the following celebrities on a two-day trip in the wilderness: Zac Efron, Ben Stiller, Tamron Hall, Deion Sanders, Channing Tatum, and Tom Arnold.
The Island is being produced by Endemol Shine North America and Bear Grylls Ventures with Grylls, Eden Gaha, Michael Brooks, Holly Wofford, and Delbert Shoopman serving as executive producers.
