Ben Higgins seems cool as a cucumber about his journey on The Bachelor, however he reportedly had a much tougher time than he has let on.

"Ben was so upset in the middle of filming that he was ready to quit a few times," a production insider told Life & Style magazine, "because of all the drama with the girls fighting."

Viewers have only seen glimpses of "villains" and cattiness on The Bachelor thus far. Lace Morris has had little outbursts of frustration every now and then, while Olivia Caridi is aggressive with Higgins and therefore gets a lot of attention from him, which the other women don't appreciate.

But tension heightened deeper into the season and Higgins reportedly "needed a pep talk from his mom" to stick with the show.

"It was so stressful for Ben," the insider said. "There were many times where he didn't know if he could continue the season."

Higgins' mother allegedly helped him with some tough choices toward the end of his journey on the show.

Six months ago, the 26-year-old software accounts manager from Indiana posted a picture of himself with his mom on Instagram.

"Got to spend the weekend with family and watch the final episode with this beautiful lady," he captioned the photo. "She stayed strong and made it through...it can't be easy watching your son on this journey but she did a pretty darn good job. #momnowknowsIamnotavirgin."

In a recent interview with Parade magazine, Higgins admitted he tiptoed around all the drama during Season 20.

"There are different situations. Every situation in the house, I have to ask myself, 'What's the wise thing to do?' If there is an argument that I feel I need to get in the middle of, I'll do that. If not, I'll let them sort it out," the Bachelor explained.

"If sometimes women come to me, I can say, 'Okay, I should handle it this way.' I don't always get involved. Sometimes me getting involved adds more drama to the situation. But other times, the women just handled it and I never knew about it."

Higgins also noted the process doesn't get any easier for him.
