Big Brother featured Sam Smith winning the Power of Veto and deciding to use it on Cliff Hogg III, resulting in HoH Christie Murphy naming Ovi Kabir the replacement nominee during Wednesday night's Season 21 episode on CBS.

The Big Brother broadcast began where Sunday night's episode had left off, with Christie serving as the season's first Head of Household and Kathryn and Cliff on the chopping block as this week's initial set of nominees for eviction.
Christie had told both Kathryn and Cliff they were pawns, but she was hoping the house would collectively decide to evict Kathryn.
However, Christie didn't exactly have anything against either of her nominees, and she wasn't even sure she wanted them to stay on the block or go home.
Christie was part of a majority alliance of eight people. "Gr8tful" was also comprised of Holly Allen, Isabella Wang, Jack Matthews, Jackson Michie, Analyse Talavera, and Tommy Bracco.
Ovi believed he was part of that alliance, but the group was just making him feel comfortable since he had overheard a couple of its members discussing how an eight-person alliance had been blooming in the house.
Although Ovi was on the outs, he had won the "Nightmare" challenge, allowing him to change a Head of Household's two nominations one time.
Following the Nomination Ceremony, Kathryn was upset because she's typically the woman in charge rather than the person who agrees to be a pawn. She didn't like the position she was in at all, and neither did Cliff.
Cliff, however, had his sights set on winning the upcoming Power of Veto competition and securing his own safety.

Meanwhile, Isabella and Kemi Faknule were becoming great friends because the girls enjoyed talking trash about their fellow houseguests as well as showmances.

The Gr8tful alliance felt great about each other, but Christie began to worry about how close Bella seemed to be with Kemi since Kemi was not a member of their group. Christie feared Kemi would eventually "wedge" Bella away from them.
Nick Maccarone therefore suggested Christie should nominate Kemi for eviction if Cliff or Kathryn manages to take him or herself off the block. Jack agreed this would be a good time to execute a backdoor plan in order to separate the "inseparable" girls.
Michie and Kathryn were then shown hitting it off on a romantic level, but Michie did not want to get involved in a showmance. He tried to hold back as much as possible, but then he ended up kissing Kathryn -- or Kat, as he called her -- in bed.
Christie's alliance really wanted to see Kemi go, but the HoH noticed Kathryn wasn't fighting for her life and she was more focused on Michie. Christie therefore admitted she wouldn't mind seeing Kathryn go if she's not willing to put her best effort into winning the veto.
It then became time to pick players for the first Power of Veto competition of the summer.
In addition to Christie as HoH and the two nominees, Kathryn and Cliff, the following houseguests were also picked to play: Sam, Jack -- who was Cliff's choice -- and Nicole Anthony.

Suddenly, Big Brother's Season 20 winner, Kaycee Clark, entered the house to host the PoV competition, and everyone was ecstatic to meet her.

Sam ended up winning the competition with a score of 21 points, beating Jack by just one point. The next-best score was 10 points, but multiple people didn't catch a single item.
Jack wasn't sure what Sam was going to do with the veto, calling him a wild card.
Jack and Nick advised Sam to remove Cliff from the chopping block because he deserved to be on the show, and Sam also appreciated Cliff is a dad just like himself, but Sam acknowledged his decision was probably going to have a huge impact on his game.
Michie then told his allies to play smart, social games so things wouldn't blow up in their faces.
Jack suggested the next four weeks will play out as such: Kemi going home, followed by Jessica Milagros, Ovi and then maybe Sam.
"Now that the backdoor is all but guaranteed, I need to make sure Gr8tful continues to dominate so that we can make it to Final 8," Jack said in the Diary Room.
"Kemi has got to go because she's gamed too hard too early, and Jessica has got to go because she has the ability to win a power in the "Panic" Whacktivity in Week 3. From there, we're looking at Ovi because he's brilliant and a smart, young guy who's ready to win at any costs."

But Christie didn't like how Jack was trying to dictate all of their future plans. It was "a red flag" to Christie, because she said she's a strong woman who doesn't need to be told what to do.
Nick was then shown developing a crush on Bella, whom he thought was "awesome" and really trusted.
Bella told Nick it would be better for their games if they ultimately take Kathryn out and keep Kemi around. Bella recognized Kemi staying in the house made sense for her since they had become good friends.
Christie wasn't fully onboard with backdooring Kemi because she thought it was simply what her alliance wanted, so she needed to figure out what would be best for her own game.

Jack insisted the right move was to target Kemi, but Christie didn't appreciate the pressure he was putting her. Christie wanted to make her own decisions and moves.
Christie therefore had a chat with Tommy and revealed she didn't want to play anyone else's game. She wanted her decisions to be a team effort and cried about how it was too early to backdoor someone.
Christie hoped Sam wouldn't use the veto after all so she wouldn't have to do anything.

Christie then vented to Tommy and Nicole about how Jack was "playing everyone" and he wanted her to do his dirty work for him.
"I love Kemi; I don't want her out!" Christie cried. "I didn't come here to play the Jack show... I came into this game not wanting to make waves."
As a result, Christie attempted to convince Sam not to use the veto so she wouldn't be put in a compromising position.
Christie cried to Sam about how people were playing very hard and very fast and backdooring Kemi was not sitting right with her.
Sam was shocked to hear Christie wanted to backdoor Kemi and wondered why.
Christie then went on to explain how Jack was trying to manipulate her and he was the center of all the plans. Christie swore to Sam that Cliff would be safe if he didn't use the veto, but Sam had already promised to use the veto.
Sam suggested Christie should nominate Ovi if he used the veto because Ovi was a mystery in the house and didn't seem to be aligned with anyone. But Christie acknowledged she could also make a big move and put Jack on the block.

"It's either going to make or break my entire summer," Christie noted.
The episode concluded with Sam using the Power of Veto on Cliff. Christie then nominated Ovi in Cliff's place, and her allies appeared shocked.
Ovi said it was not a personal move and she just wanted to keep the balance by having a girl and a guy on the chopping block.
"This hurts because I thought I was in an alliance with Christie," Ovi said, adding that he couldn't use his "nightmare" power because it needed to be played after nominations.
Jack was frustrated because he thought Christie was going to follow through with their plan, and he noted they needed to improve communication in order to not cause chaos in the house.
Christie didn't know who was going to be sent packing, but she didn't really seem to care.
