Big Brother featured a surprise eviction for the houseguests Tuesday night that had a shocking result.

However, Vanessa assured Steve that he wasn't her target and her nominations had just been based on her gut feelings.
Vanessa explained to the cameras that because John was a bit of a weak player and never won any Head of Household competitions, he was the obvious choice to take to the end since he'd be easy to beat. Vanessa found it necessary to make choices that would better her chance of being selected for the Final 3.
John considered throwing the Power of Veto competition to Austin as long as Austin and the twins kept him in the house another week. John thought it was a way to build trust with them going into the end of the game. He wanted them to trust him over Vanessa.
For the Power of Veto competition, the participating houseguests were required to solve a giant puzzle on a magnetic board that constantly demagnetized and dropped the pieces if mistakes were made. The players also had to run back and forth on balance beams.
Vanessa hoped she'd be able to keep nominations the same so she wouldn't have to name Austin or Liz the replacement nominee.
In the end, John tried his best to win the PoV, and he succeeded. Vanessa cried because John's victory changed everything for her. John had been her easy target, and now, she was going to serve as the swing vote between two solid alliances -- the twins and Austin vs. John and Steve.
At the Veto Meeting, John clearly used the PoV to save himself. Vanessa said that, in order to keep things fair, she was going to replace John with Austin because Liz had to sit on the block the week prior. Austin seemed to accept his fate no problem, believing that Vanessa absolutely had his back.
A part of Austin worried though that a great gameplayer like Vanessa would realize she had an opportunity to take out another great gameplayer, who might stand in her way of $500,000. Austin turned out to be right.
Vanessa asked John if they'd go down as the dumbest people in Big Brother history for keeping a showmance in the game when they're so close to the Final 3. John insisted it was a bad idea and then Vanessa came to the conclusion she'd be a shoo-in for the Final 3 if she teamed up with John and Steve again.
Vanessa then promised John that she was on his side. But John played with the idea of keeping Austin around just to tick off Vanessa. When he revealed this plan to Austin, Austin acted extremely excited only to tell the cameras shortly afterwards John would have to be a crazy person to take a showmance any further.
When it became time for the live eviction, Liz voted to evict Steve and then John voted to evict Austin. Vanessa, as the HoH, served as the tie-breaking vote. Vanessa shocked the group by explaining Austin was her vote for eviction because he was just too much of a threat to her game.

Austin was totally blindsided and furious that his loyal ally had betrayed him like that. On his way out of the house, Austin yelled at Vanessa that she won't win the game because she won't get any jury votes. Vanessa didn't seem phased by this information, pointing out that she had already thought of that and didn't really care.
During his post-eviction interview with Big Brother host Julie Chen, Austin sat in a chair with no shoes on and no bag. He had no idea this was coming and told Julie that Vanessa "scumbagged" her way deeper into the game. Austin was especially disappointed in Vanessa because he had every intention to honor their Day 2 deal to the very end.
The episode concluded with the next HoH competition. The houseguests watched videos containing statements made by fellow houseguests this summer. The players had to fill in what the bleeped out words were. The winner of the competition ended up being Steve, who automatically earned a spot in the Final 3.
Steve will also be eligible to play in the final Head of Household competition of the season.
