NBC has announced the fourth-season American Idol winner will replace Faith Hill as the singer of "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night," the opening theme to the network's Sunday Night Football on NBC broadcasts.

"I am thrilled to be a part of NBC's Sunday Night Football and am so honored they asked me," Underwood said in a statement. "I have always loved football season, and it is so exciting to now become part of it every Sunday night!"

Underwood's performance of "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" will debut on Sunday, September 8 when NBC broadcasts its first Sunday Night Football broadcast of the 2013 NFL football season -- an NFC East rivalry game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants.

"Carrie Underwood was our first and only choice to perform the Sunday Night Football opening," Sunday Night Football producer Fred Gaudelli said. "She's one of America's most popular entertainers and the perfect fit for our show."

"Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" is set to the original Joan Jett song, "I Hate Myself for Loving You," and was first performed by P!nk during Sunday Night Football's inaugural 2006 season.

Hill then performed the theme from 2007 through 2012.
