The vague standards for the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart have finally caught up to American Idol finalist Clay Aiken. According to Billboard, Clay's CD single, "This Is The Night" b/w "Bridge Over Troubled Water" fell from first to third on the Hot 100 Singles this week, with Beyonce Knowles's "Crazy In Love" (which is not available as a CD single) taking over at #1. Clay's single retains the top spot on the Billboard/Nielsen SoundScan Hot 100 Singles Sales chart for the third week in a row, however.

For Idol winner Ruben Studdard, the news wasn't as good. Ruben's "Flying Without Wings" b/w "Superstar" dropsped from second to 13th on the Billboard charts, just behind original Idol winner Kelly Clarkson's "Miss Independent", a cut from her Thankful CD that has not been released on a CD single. Thankful also remains the #12 CD in its 11th week of release, indicating that Kelly's music career is flourishing despite the debacle of her movie From Justin to Kelly.

Her movie co-star, Justin Guarini, however, is not doing as well. In addition to the movie bombing, his eponymous CD has dropped all the way to 88th in the Billboard Hot 200 CDs in just its third week of release, and he was ticketed for unsafe powerboat operation while showing off on a jet ski with Kelly. We wonder if Justin is on the verge of a quick transition from runner-up to rock bottom.
