Despite the ongoing battle in Canadian Idol, an American Idol still rules the singles charts north of the border. According to the Nielsen SoundScan Canadian Single Sales chart, American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken holds the #1 spot for the week ending August 24, the 11th straight week, with his single "Bridge Over Troubled Water" b/w "This Is The Night."

Remaining at #2 is Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday," while Idol winner Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" b/w "Superstar" remains #4. On the Nielsen SoundScan U.S. Singles Sales chart, though, Hilary Duff has grabbed the top spot for the second straight week (after 2 weeks at #2), with Clay #2 again (after 10 weeks at #1) and Ruben #3 (for the fifth straight week, after 7 weeks at #2).
Also climbing the singles chart in both countries is the American Juniors single "One Step Closer," which rose from #8 to #6 in the U.S. in its second week, and which debuted at #21 in Canada.
Hilary Duff's debut contemporary CD, Metamophosis, was released this week and currently ranks #18 on Amazon.com. Meanwhile, Clay Aiken's debut CD, now entitled Clay Aiken, will not ship until October 14 but currently ranks #12 on Amazon.com. Thus, it looks like the competition between these two singers who double as TV stars will keep chugging along for a while -- although it may move to the album charts.
