The 26-year-old charity founder and former professional football player began filming The Bachelor season thinking he had everything under control, but as Colton has said on the show, he quickly realized he didn't have all the answers.

During a recent appearance on former The Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe's Off the Vine podcast, Colton shared how his expectations for a relationship changed as the season progressed.

"Did it play out the way you thought it would?" Kaitlyn asked Colton of The Bachelor's 23rd season.

"No!" Colton replied. "I'll say this: you think you want one thing and then you continue to grow throughout the season and you realize what you want and what you need -- everything changes."

Colton elaborated, "I don't know if you're guilty of this too, but like, you have an idea going in and you're so excited to be the Bachelor or the Bachelorette where you're just like, 'I can't wait to get down on one knee. I can't wait to be engaged! I can't wait to be married! I can't wait to have kids!' You get so excited that you put the cart before the horse."

"And then all of a sudden you're like, 'Oh, but I have to take these steps in these relationships,'" Colton explained.

Kaitlyn subsequently acknowledged, "And then it throws off your whole game."

"One hundred percent," Colton agreed.

Colton thought he had everything figured out after appearing on both The Bachelorette's fourteenth season and Bachelor in Paradise's fifth edition last year.

He assumed his experience with the franchise would make starring on The Bachelor a breeze.

"I went through The Bachelorette. I've been on that side of things. I went through Paradise where I wasn't dumb, like, I knew my storyline with [Tia Booth] and what we had was going to be the main focus," Colton shared.

"That's all everybody on that beach wanted to talk about. Like, come on!... Paradise was my personal hell. I will go on the record and say that. It was not paradise for me... But I went into my season thinking I had it all figured out. I thought I knew the game."

Colton continued, "And I had a big ego check. I got humbled. I got humbled big time where I was just like, 'Alright, I'm going to do this, this and this. This is how the Bachelor should do things.'"

"I had watched seasons before and so I was like, 'Okay, this is what I need to say and this is what I need to do,' like [tell the cameras], 'I'm still working on myself.'"

"But you are really watching me go through this and grow as a human being and realize, 'Oh sh-t, I really don't have all of this figured out,'" he said.

Colton said his biggest regret from The Bachelor was "taking things too far" and hitting a camera out of his face during a moment of frustration.
