"[Police] got there and calmed the situation down," an unidentified officer told People. "No one was arrested and no citations were issued."
According to People sources, the argument occurred after Kate traveled to family's home after calling the house and learning that Jon, who had custody of their eight children at the time, was using a babysitter who didn't meet her approval.
(Per their custody agreement, the children have continued to live in the 7,000-square foot, 24-acre home the couple bought for $1.1 million last year while Jon and Kate take turns living there depending on who has custody of them at the time.)
"Due to the custody agreement, Kate couldn't enter the property," a source told People. "The cops had no choice but to tell Kate she couldn't go past the gate."
After breaking down crying, Kate reportedly left the property and checked into a nearby hotel.
Jon subsequently confirmed People's report in an interview with a Splash News paparazzi cameraman on Friday.
"It was a miscommunication. Kate said she was coming home and I said 'Well it's my time to spend time with the kids,'" Jon said. "You know me, I don't come home when she's with the kids because I respect her time... when she has custody I don't come home and vice versa, that's the way it's supposed to work.
"And then she tried to come home yesterday and I wouldn't let her in the gate and then I guess she called the police and the police came and they basically said it's a civil matter and that we would have to work it out with our attorneys and stuff like that... she tried to cry it up with the cops and it didn't work and they just basically said 'You have to leave' and my attorney said to the police officer 'Gotta leave,' you know, that was it."
Jon also confirmed that a disagreement over a babysitter, which People identified as Stephanie Santoro, was what sparked the argument.
"I guess she didn't agree with my babysitting, but you know, I didn't approve hers... she didn't agree and that is something that we will have to work out with our attorneys and custody and all that stuff. That was it, it was said and done. That was like the first time I've seen her in a long time but it was like 'Gotta go,'" Jon told the cameraman.
"I came home for filming and I didn't have babysitting for one day so I called my babysitter Steph and she came over and watched for filming. She's always available -- like some of our babysitters live far away -- but I had to get things done," he added.

"I have no idea [what Kate's issue was.] I guess [it was] because she didn't have approval I didn't approve hers, so -- but I didn't come home when she had custody and make a big stink."
