The Los Angeles coroner says actor Jeff Conaway died of an accidental drug overdose that was complicated by pulmonary problems.

Conaway, who starred in the 1970s sitcom "Taxi," died in May and had tested positive for drugs on admission to a Los Angeles-area hospital.

The coroner's office said in a written statement it could not conduct a toxicology screen for the specific drugs because a blood sample was not obtained in time. A urine test, however, confirmed the presence of drugs in general.

The New York Daily News said Conaway died May 27 after being taken off life support.

Conaway struggled with substance abuse for several years and was featured on the VH1 series "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" in 2008, The Hollywood Reporter said.
