Dancing with the Stars pro Peta Murgatroyd was shown being shocked to find out the guy she's paired with for Season 18 is someone she had very briefly dated.

During Monday night's Dancing with the Stars premiere broadcast, Murgatroyd was shown meeting Big Time Rush singer James Maslow at a rehearsal and discovering he would be her celebrity partner for the season. The pro dancer's mouth dropped and she said, "Oh my gosh," the second he walked through the door.

"I actually met James once before for dinner. We kind of hit it off. I thought he was a good-looking guy, and then, he went away on tour for two weeks and I didn't see him until he walked into the studio," Murgatroyd told a producer.

"You could've texted me or something to say, you know, like..." Murgatroyd told Maslow.

"Well, what if -- what am I going to say?!" Maslow asked her, blushing.

"'Hey,'" Murgatroyd quickly replied.

When a producer asked the pair to establish how they knew each other, Maslow jumped at the chance to say, "We're friends."

"Friends!" Murgatroyd awkwardly agreed.

The producer then questioned Murgatroyd on whether something had happened between them at a previous date. Murgatroyd looked around the room sheepishly with a smile and declined to answer.

Murgatroyd and Maslow were then shown sharing a quick exchange in which Murgatroyd called their situation "interesting" and the singer suggested they'll "pull it off."

"I'm going to change into something so that you can kick my ass in the dancing," Maslow told her before walking out of the rehearsal space.

"What just happened?" Murgatroyd was shown saying to herself. "Holy moly."

Later on, Maslow told a staffer, "It's really cool. We're keeping things professional right now. Would I take her on another date? Yeah, she's a really cool girl. But right now, we're really here for the same reason. We want to win."

After the couple took the stage and danced during Monday night's performance show, Maslow reiterated to new co-host Erin Andrews, once again, they're just friends and Murgatroyd is simply teaching him how to dance. The partnership received a score of 21 from the Dancing with the Stars judges for their foxtrot routine.

Murgatroyd, 27, and Maslow, 23, had been photographed together out on their date February 4 in Los Angeles. According to a Life & Style source, they met through a mutual friend and got along so well things had been expected to "get serious soon" between them.

Murgatroyd was previously linked to seventeenth-season Dancing with the Stars partner Brant Daugherty although both parties repeatedly denied they were dating.

Murgatroyd split from her ex-boyfriend of 10 months, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, a fellow Dancing with the Stars pro, around this same time last year.
