Demi Lovato nearly returned to rehab for an eating disorder in summer 2013.
The 22-year-old singer and former "The X Factor" judge admitted as much in an interview with Fitness magazine. Lovato completed three months of treatment for bulimia and drug and alcohol abuse in 2010, and said boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama pointed out when she resumed unhealthy habits last year.
"It's been difficult," she confessed. "I was obsessing over food and terrified of it at the same time. Wilmer noticed and called me out on it, which was a relief. I was done being afraid of food and so tired of overeating and not knowing why I did it."
"I've learned to appreciate my body for what it is," she shared. "It helps to remind myself how far I've come ... This tour, I've had the confidence to show my arms at every single concert. It may seem like a small thing, but for me, that's huge."
Lovato said surrounding herself with honest and supportive people made it easier to get back on the right track and improve. She follows a structured and nutritious meal plan, and exercises up to six times a week to help elevate her mood.
Lovato released her fourth studio album, Demi, in 2013, and is currently working on her fifth record. She and Valderrama have been an on and off couple since 2010, and posted a rare intimate photo on Instagram in November.
