Distance also allegedly played a role in the split. Hough, 28, has been filming Dancing with the Stars in Los Angeles, while Dobrev, 24, has been filming TV series in Atlanta, GA.
A friend of the pair told Us, "The distance was too much to handle."
The couple was reportedly set up by Julianne Hough, Derek's sister, who is also best friends with Dobrev.
"It got serious really fast and they're inseparable. They're already saying 'I love you,'" a source told Life & Style late last month.
However, the breakup reportedly hasn't affect Julianne and Dobrev's friendship.
"Julianne understands -- there are no hard feelings," a source told Us.
Hough and Dobrev were spotted out in public together for the first time earlier this month when they spent a day at Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights in Los Angeles accompanied by Julianne and actress Lily Collins, another close friend of the pair.
Hough had previously been linked to Cheryl Cole, Shannon Elizabeth, Lauren Conrad, and Nicole Scherzinger. Dobrev broke up with ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder in May. They co-star on The Vampire Diaries together and had dated for about three years.
