"I will be back!" Hough told People.
The three-time Dancing with the Stars champion -- who has won the competition with Nicole Scherzinger, Brooke Burke and Jennifer Grey but announced in January he'd be skipping out last spring's season to pursue his film career by co-starring in a danced-themed movie Cobu 3-D -- said his short-lived but necessary Dancing with the Stars absence revived his competitive spirit.
"When we're doing the show we're in the bubble and we get into the stress and the drama and all of the behind the scenes stuff," Hough explained. "It was good for me to take a season off and see what he audience sees. It gave me a new boost and inspiration to want to do some great things."
Hough said he is ultimately looking forward to the thirteenth season of Dancing with the Stars, which premieres on Monday, September 19 at 8PM ET/PT.
"I will hopefully live up to expectations and do a good job," the 26-year-old professional dancer added.
