While banter between host Ryan Seacrest and judge Simon Cowell has seemed unusually witty during American Idol's sixth season, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe insists Idol remains an unscripted television series.

Lythgoe was specifically referencing dialogue between Cowell and Seacrest that occurred during Idol's live Top 12 performance episode on March 13, which revolved around coming out of the closet and had the audience laughing and finalist Melinda Doolittle with her head in her hands.
"I wouldn't have kept this gay angst going for so long," Lythgoe told TMZ.com. "They would have both come out by now in my story."
Lythgoe also denied a recent Star magazine report that he "writes notes on who Simon should make snarky comments about" during Idol rehearsals.
"I don't make notes," Lythgoe told TMZ.com. "Simon keeps to himself in his trailer before the show with a feed, so he can listen to the music."
