Although her debut album enjoyed some chart success when it debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 album sales chart, Katharine McPhee fans shouldn't expect to hear the same type of sound on the American Idol fifth-season runner-up's sophomore effort.

"I'll probably be making a much different record next time around," McPhee told MTV News during a Tuesday interview. "Maybe more adult. I definitely have thoughts and ideas; maybe more like the female version of John Mayer... I haven't put much thought into it, but the wheels are turning."
While she continues to brainstorm her next musical venture, McPhee is also busy at work adding to her acting credentials.
She's currently in Los Angeles finishing production on I Know What Boys Like -- a comedy produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions that she co-stars in alongside Scary Movie actress Anna Faris -- which is scheduled to premiere mid-2008.
However McPhee already has her sights set on Success, another independent film she expects to begin filming this fall.

"This is a whole new beginning," she told MTV News. "It's darker [than I Know What Boys Like], it's definitely hard to explain, but a specific style... [The Success script] has great writing and definitely quirky characters, really well-developed characters."
McPhee added she "can't really give away too much, because I don't know who's attached to it yet."
"They've made offers to the other big parts. I'm just really excited about it, because I think it's an interesting script," she told MTV News. "I play this sweet, nice girl who gets the attention of this guy... She's cool; she's the cool chick. And then there's this other female character, and [it becomes] very complicated. It's one of those interesting indie films."
According to McPhee, Success is scheduled to begin filming in November once deals with other actors are finalized.
McPhee is also set to star in The Last Caller, a dark romantic comedy and coming-of-age independent film scheduled to begin shooting in and around New York in the coming weeks.
