Big Brother viewers were initially surprised to learn Kathryn Dunn and Nick Maccarone had formed a relationship in the jury house as they had sparred with each other while competing in the game.
While in the Big Brother house, Kat didn't appreciate or support Nick's gameplay, and she seemed to think he was manipulative and controlling. In fact, Kat told Nicole Franzel and Victor Arroyo on their Coco Caliente podcast in December that she "could not stand" Nick.
Nick had also been in a romantic relationship with Isabella "Bella" Wang in the house, and he had expressed his love for her.
But Bella broke up with Nick over Twitter while he was still inside the house because of his flirtatious actions, allowing Nick and Kat to get closer.
"He wiped my tears away when I was crying and calmed me down while I was stressed," Kat recalled to Us Weekly of her time with Nick in the jury house.
"Our relationship... wasn't based on cheap sexual gratification -- it was an actual, genuine friendship."
But Kat and Nick had a lot of chemistry on-camera and were very touchy-feely with one another, so it became pretty obvious romantic feelings were involved.
After Big Brother wrapped its 21st season and Jackson Michie was crowned champion, Kat and Nick reportedly spent time together with their fellow cast members in Las Vegas, NV, in September.
Nick then seemingly confirmed their romance on Instagram in October 2019 when he posted a cozy photo with Kat at the time.
"I love our 'genuine friendship,'" the therapist captioned the picture.
Kat told Us one month later she and Nick then spent a few days together in Los Angeles, CA, before Nick headed back home to New Jersey.
They subsequently traveled back and forth to see each other until their eventual breakup, while they announced in April 2020.
"Just the whole timing of the quarantine really took a toll," Kat told Us.
Kat said she had planned to visit Nick in New Jersey but had to cancel her travel itinerary once stay-at-home regulations were put into effect due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The pair apparently broke up on April 9 following an argument on her Instagram Live.
According to Kat, social-media comments from Nick's followers contributed to the couple's split.
"They were messaging him things like, 'Oh, you deserve to find someone who really loves you, and she's just not it.' You know, just getting involved in our business," Kat revealed.
"It was kind of starting to cause, like, little arguments here and there. Just that along with the stress of quarantine and everything going on, it was getting like a little shaky I guess."
Their fight on Instagram Live was over Kat poking fun at her boyfriend, according to Us.
"Regularly, like, I think that he would have taken the joke in stride, but I think that just like that on top of the fans saying, like, 'Oh, she doesn't really like you' and all the other stuff, I think that it was maybe just like the straw that broke the camel's back," Kat admitted.
Once Nick removed himself from the live session, he and Kat reportedly fired away at each other in the comments section.
"It was just a little -- and I'll say this because we've talked about it since, so he knows -- it was very childish. It was something that shouldn't have happened, especially on such a public outlet," Kat confessed.
Kat said she and Nick had "a really long talk" after their argument and the conversation resulted in them choosing to part ways.
"We both decided that it was best given the current stressors, that it wasn't a good time to really continue our relationship," Kat shared with the magazine.
In June 2020, Reality Steve spoiler blogger Steve Carbone -- who like Kat, lives in Dallas -- announced he and Kat had recently begun dating. However in December 2020, Carbone announced the couple had ended their relationship.
