MTV wouldn't have The Hills without Lauren "L.C." Conrad, who apparently almost decided against appearing in the Laguna Beach spin-off's third season before filming began.

"I actually came dangerously close to not doing season three, because I really didn't want to do the show with [Heidi Montag and fiance Spencer Pratt]," said Conrad in Seventeen magazine's October issue, People reported Thursday. "I'm not who they are. I don't stage my own publicity. I just kind of live my life and do my job, and I don't want to be grouped with them."

Conrad said it wasn't until MTV stepped in and explained her importance to the docu-reality series that she decided to continue to let cameras follow her, however she said don't expect a big reunion with her ex-BFF.

"[MTV said] Heidi and Spencer were always a part of the show, and they can't all of a sudden make main characters disappear," Conrad told Seventeen. "And so we continue to follow their lives, and the producers keep letting Heidi and Spencer think there's some hope [that we'll make up]."

Montag and Conrad's ongoing tiff -- which Conrad alleges began when Montag and Pratt began spreading rumors that she had recorded a sex tape with former Laguna Beach star and ex-beau Jason Wahler -- had gotten so vicious in recent weeks that MTV imposed a "media blackout" on The Hills' third season cast only a few days prior to its premiere.

Conrad has previously stated that Montag is "not the same person anymore" because she's to busy living lavishly in the limelight.

"Some people are willing to betray years of friendship just to get a little bit of the spotlight," Conrad told Seventeen. "They just want to become famous so badly, and that's never really made sense to me. I mean, it's fun to go out and do stuff in Hollywood, but if it was gone tomorrow, I really wouldn't be disappointed."
