Maksim Chmerkovskiy says his infant son had a "crazy" trip to the emergency room when he was only a couple of weeks old.
"He was a couple weeks old," Chmerkovskiy recalled. "It was amazing, and then he got a fever and we had to go ... to the emergency room."
"We were so, like, not prepared for the protocol [and] procedure that happened at the emergency rooms with infants that small," he said.
"Nobody really ever told us anything about that. It was a big shock to the mind and to the heart."
"You start to see a little IV on a little baby and you're like, 'Oh my God, this is crazy.' And then we had to travel and fly back to L.A. after this just happened. It was a lot for us," the star shared.Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd, who got engaged in December 2015, welcomed Shai on Jan. 4.
The couple introduced their son on "Good Morning America" in February after keeping him hidden from the public eye for weeks.
"I specifically wanted to keep him very private from the beginning because we wanted him to ourselves. I think he's so special that we wanted those moments, those first moments, to be for ourselves," Chmerkovskiy added.
Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd will both compete on "Dancing with the Stars" Season 24, and are partnered with "Glee" alum Heather Morris and "The Bachelor" Season 21 star Nick Viall, respectively.
Murgatroyd introduced Shai to Viall and his fiancee, Vanessa Grimaldi, this week.
