Marta Maldanado was a 30-year-old from Milwaukee, WI, when she got involved with Daya, a 26-year-old Muslim man from Algeria.
Marta had been communicating with Daya for about one year despite a huge language barrier in which Daya did not speak English.
Daya also came from a very traditional family and didn't approve of Marta's job as an exotic dancer. He also wanted her to convert Islam.
Marta planned to travel to Algeria to meet Daya for the first time in person, but she never had the chance, and their relationship didn't work out.
According to the Algerian Embassy's official website, travelers must obtain an "invitation letter signed and legalized at a local city hall" from their Algerian host in order to obtain a tourist visa to visit the country -- and Daya allegedly never completed the task for Marta.
Marta therefore had to cancel her trip to Algeria and said Daya stopped responding to her messages after several arguments.
"I wish I could say he's a good man, but I can't. It does [upset me]. I guess this is what happens with online relationships... but I'm confident it's all going to work out for me one day," Marta told the 90 Day Fiance cameras.
