"Making Catfish: The TV Show the last two years has exposed me to all kinds of strange and unusual scenarios, but nothing could have prepared me for the twists and turns of season three," Schulman said in a statement.
"This season we have family members catfishing each other, celebrities hunting down their super-fan stalkers, Instagram romance, people posing as famous music producers and scams resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of dollars. The lies, love, betrayals and surprises will not only make you think twice about online love, but will completely change the way you think about society."
In addition to revealing new stories, Schulman and Joseph will also utilize new techniques to expand their investigating collection -- including new digital-based research, more in-person meetings and bringing the hopeful along for the investigation to avoid deception.
"This season is much more mobile than the previous seasons; We actually feel like detectives exploring the cold, dark corners of America both online and in real life," added Joseph.
"A lot of these catfish only have cell phones which changes the mode of investigation. Reverse telephone lookups and tracing the geo-tags of photos has become more vital to our process and image search is no longer our weapon of choice. We've also resorted to some good-old fashioned techniques like knocking on doors, jumping on planes to visit 'witnesses' and asking questions in person."
One week prior to Catfish: The TV Show's third-season debut, MTV will air the first of two Catfish: Untold Stories on Wednesday, April 30 at 10PM ET/PT.
Both hour-long specials will give viewers a way to re-live "weird but true catfishing tales," according to the network. Schulman and Joseph will also conduct interviews with the show's actual participants who wish to share their crazy experiences.
Catfish: The TV Show is produced by Relativity Television and Catfish Picture Company LLC with Schulman, Joseph, Tom Forman, Brad Bishop, Julie Link Steffens, David Metzler, Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost, Andrew Jarecki, Mark Smerling, Marshall Eisen, Nomi Ernst Leidner, and Dave Sirulnick serving as executive producers.
