NBC has announced its new revival of Fear Factor will premiere on Monday, December 12 at 8PM ET/PT and take over the time period currently occupied by The Sing-Off, which will conclude one week earlier on December 5.
"We have taken the groundbreaking Fear Factor franchise that many fans remember fondly and have ramped it up to make it even more challenging and competitive than ever before," NBC reality chief Paul Telegdy said in a statement.
"Once again, the contestants will have to face their ultimate fears to prevail -- and the tension and drama of that process will make for some riveting television."
Hosted by Joe Rogan, Fear Factor's revival will utilize advancements in technology to test its contestants' physical and mental limits through a series of challenges. The revival -- which NBC has initially ordered eight episodes of -- will also feature a new couples format in which four teams of two people, including spouses, family members, co-workers, and friends, will compete against one another.

"When you have pairs, there's so much more at stake. You're relying on your partner to get through this stunt. There's a lot of screaming back and forth and better energy. So we're sticking with that," Fear Factor's executive producer Matt Kunitz told TV Guide Magazine in June, adding that one of the eight episodes may feature celebrity contestants.
Fear Factor contestants who complete their tasks will continue to advance in the competition until only one team remains. The team to win the final challenge will receive a $50,000 grand prize.
According to Telegdy, the network began considering reviving Fear Factor after discovering repeats of the show's original episodes were producing high ratings on Chiller, the horror-focused cable network NBC's NBCUniversal parent company launched in 2007.
