The 25-year-old pommel horse specialist on the U.S. men's gymnastics team from Worcester, MA, was announced as Dancing with the Stars' first contestant during Thursday's episode of Good Morning America on ABC.

"I want to bring some of that gymnastics -- maybe a backflip or a handstand [to the ballroom]," Stephen said on GMA. "I want to have fun with it."

Stephen will be the first male gymnast to ever compete on Dancing with the Stars, and he said he's "very excited" to test his dance skills.

Stephen's score on the pommel horse in the team event at the Olympics this summer launched Team USA into third place, resulting in the men's team winning its first Olympic medal in 16 years.

Stephen also made history by becoming the first American man to medal in the Olympic pommel-horse event in eight years.

Many Olympic viewers gave Stephen the nickname of "Clark Kent" because he'd remove his glasses before wowing the crowd with his Superman-like pommel horse skills.

Stephen recently shared on TikTok that he has an eye condition called strabismus, also known as crossed eyes.

When asked if he'll remove his glasses for Dancing with the Stars performances, Stephen quipped, "I might have fun with it -- I'm scared they'll fly off. But maybe we could do a gadget to keep them on, or maybe a new pair of glasses to match the theme, right?"

According to USA Gymnastics, Stephen has racked in four U.S. pommel horse titles and tied the record for most pommel horse championships in United States history.

Prior to competing in the Olympics, Stephen graduated from Penn State University in 2020 with a degree in electrical engineering.
