The attorney for hotel heiress Paris Hilton said the 45-day jail term ordered by a Los Angeles judge for driving with a suspended license was "ludicrous."

"I'm shocked and disappointed at the sentence by the judge," attorney Howard Weitzman said after the socialite, singer and actress was sentenced Friday in Superior Court. He said he would appeal the sentence.
"To sentence Paris Hilton to jail is uncalled for, inappropriate and ludicrous," Weitzman said. "She was singled out for who she is. She's been selectively targeted. Paris was honest in her testimony. We plan to appeal. Shame on the system."
In handing down the sentence, Judge Michael Sauer rejected Hilton's claim she did not know her license was suspended and produced a document she had signed Jan. 15 saying she knew her driving privileges had been revoked, People magazine reported.
Hilton, 26, has until June 5 to begin serving her sentence.
