More than 10,000 people have signed an online petition urging rapper Kanye West to stay away from the late David Bowie's music.

West has not confirmed he's working on singing some of Bowie's famous songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s, but based on reports that he is, about 10,000 netizens have signed the U.K.-based petition created by a user by the name of Peter Piranha.

"David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century," the petition's description reads. "It would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West."

News of the online campaign comes shortly after an article published in the Daily Star on Wednesday quoted an anonymous source as saying West is working on covering Bowie's music.

"Some are straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing. On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie's music," the source said.

After David Bowie's death on Jan. 10, West did take to Twitter to express his condolences. "David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations," he tweeted on Jan. 11. "So fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime."
