"My best Christmas surprise is happening. We're engaged yall! @HannahBlackwell1" Phillips wrote in a Friday night tweet in which he shared a photo of the happy couple posing with Blackwell's engagement ring.
"I've been dreaming of this for over 20 years. I've been dreaming of this guy for just that long," Blackwell added in a tweet on her own.
Phillips and Blackwell began dating in 2009 after they met while volunteering at a women and children's shelter, according to E! News.
"He was a little more nervous asking for our 1st date ha. We were so awkward!" Blackwell tweeted.
Phillips won American Idol's eleventh season in 2012, defeating Jessica Sanchez.
Afterward, he had credited Blackwell for helping him get through the competition -- which he almost had to quit due to a kidney issue.
"She's so excited for me and she's helped me out a lot through this... maybe she'll be able to come on tour with me. It'd be cool to have her there because she supports me throughout all this and I love her to death," he told reporters.
