Phillip Phillips' medical situation has reportedly gotten worse.

The American Idol eleventh-season finalist's kidney issues have worsened to the point where his physician told him he should have surgery immediately, but Phillips is refusing to do so before the show ends, TMZ reported Friday.

However, Phillips' doctor reportedly told him it's mandatory he goes in for surgery immediately following the finale next week. According to TMZ, the 21-year-old singer from Leesburg, GA, will need at least six weeks to recover from the operation.

When Phillips traveled to his hometown last Saturday, his family doctor reportedly met with him and was taken aback by how little he ate and how "horrible" he looked.

Phillip's condition, which required him to have a stent put in at the beginning of the Idol season as a temporary solution until he could go under the knife, has impacted his vocal ability, according to TMZ. The severity of his kidney problems is also reportedly why Phillips has frequently been absent from filming Ford commercials and other American Idol field productions.

When Phillips was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment in early March after experiencing intense pain in his abdomen, TMZ reported he had undergone five kidney stone removal procedures since October of last year. The singer was also hospitalized in January for a similar condition.
