ABC has begun production on a six-episode weight-loss reality series featuring O'Neal that is scheduled to air this summer, Daily Variety reported on Monday.  Each one-hour episode of the series will focus on the current Miami Heat center as he launches a campaign to help elementary and junior-high students in Florida lose weight.

Currently filming in Broward County, FL, according to Variety, parts of the reality series will show O'Neal interacting with the youth and encouraging them to stick with their weight-loss routine.

O'Neal was the NBA's Rookie of the Year in 1993 after a successful collegiate career at Louisiana State University.  A four-time NBA champion -- three with the Los Angeles Lakers and one with the Heat -- O'Neal was also named league MVP in 2000.

He has appeared in several films, including Blue Chips and Kazaam, and has also released several rap albums, including 1994's "Shaq Fu: Da Return," which was certified gold.  O'Neal has also served as a reserve officer for both L.A. Port Police and Miami Beach.

The untitled reality series is being executive produced by RDF USA, along with O'Neal, Rick Ringbakk, Perry Rogers, Chris Handy and Mike Perris.
