Paula Abdul may be returning to American Idol to say farewell to Simon Cowell.

The former judge will be part of a special send-off for Cowell that is currently planned for this week's American Idol ninth-season finale on Wednesday night, a source told People in a Friday report.

Abdul announced last summer that she would not be returning for American Idol's currently-airing ninth season after she had served on its judging panel along with Cowell since the Fox reality series premiered.

Cowell recently stated he feels American Idol was "different" this season without Abdul.

Wednesday night's live American Idol ninth-season finale will mark the end of Cowell's role on the show's judging panel after he inked a deal with Fox earlier this year to launch his British The X Factor reality competition series for the network in Fall 2011.
