Studdard has unsuccessfully attempted to battle his weight several times since he won American Idol in 2003, beating out runner-up Clay Aiken. In 2006, he attempted a special low-calorie diet and strict exercise regimen but discovered the combination wasn't the healthiest way to shed pounds.
"I was losing weight, but I was exhausted. It was making me sick," the 35-year-old singer told People. "I'm a big man. There was no way to do those workouts on that amount of food, so everything was contradicting itself."
Studdard reportedly ditched that method and became a vegetarian that same year, resulting in a 70-pound weight-loss from his 455-pound starting point.
"I've never had an issue with my weight," Studdard said. "[But] my family has a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart-related issues -- things I didn't have to deal with yet because I'm young. But I don't want to be worried at 40, and if I don't fix things now, I will be."
Studdard reportedly lived a healthy lifestyle while married to ex-wife Surata Zuri McCants, however, he fell off the wagon following their 2012 divorce.
The Biggest Loser's new season will premiere on Tuesday, October 8 at 8PM ET/PT.
