Sci Fi Channel has announced that it has ordered WCG GameQuest, a new eight-episode reality competition that will seek to find the "Best All-Around Gamer" in America.

WCG GameQuest, which is scheduled to premiere in the first quarter of 2009, will feature 12 contestants and use a format in which the gamers will initially have to compete in video game-inspired physical challenges and then move on to playing the actual video games the physical challenges were based on.

The elimination challenges will take place "in an arena before hundreds of spectators," according to the network.

"With two out of every three American households playing videogames, it's clear that this mainstream phenomenon is a perfect arena for the Channel's agenda of broadening the brand while celebrating imagination," said Sci Fi Channel president Dave Howe. "The colorful and eclectic group of men and women competitors will simultaneously fit and completely shake up the ultimate gamer stereotype."

WCG GameQuest's winner will receive a prize package that includes $100,000 and trips to video game tournaments organized by World Cyber Games, which will serve as one of the show's production partners.

World Cyber Games hosts events and online tournaments that draw more than 1.5 million players from 78 countries every year.

WCG GameQuest is being produced by Granada America and World Cyber Games, with Micheal Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith serving as executive producers.
