The 55-year-old "X Factor" creator and judge offered amends on Twitter, writing, "Sorry for swearing on the show tonight. It's not big and it's not clever. Wish Karen Mav had kept a seat ... Yes I did apologise to my contestants."

Cowell shocked viewers by swearing and sulking after being assigned the "Overs" for the six-chair challenge.

The "Over-25" contestants were crestfallen as their new mentor demanded of the hosts, "Are you winding me up? Are you sure this is the right paper in there?"

The television personality was previously assigned the "Overs" in Season 11, and coached Ben Haenow to victory.

Rita Ora will mentor the "Girls" in Season 12, with Nick Grimshaw to lead the "Boys" and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini to coach the "Groups."

Cowell is known for his blunt and brusque critiques, but is considered an adept talent scout. He has served as a judge or executive producer on several reality competitions, including "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent," in addition to "The X Factor."
