Survivor host Jeff Probst says producers really tried to throw Season 31's returning castaways for a loop.

"We're going to run the first challenge, 'Quest For Fire,' at night -- the same way we did 15 years ago. It will be at dusk so we'll have the fires glowing, and then we're going to go straight to Tribal," Probst told Entertainment Weekly.
"So out of the gate, they're going to figure, 'We'll go back to camp, we'll strategize, we'll figure who we're going to vote out.' And then I'm going to say, 'And losers, you're going to have a date with me tonight at Tribal Council and we're going right now.'"
Probst reiterated how shocked the players on the losing tribe will be to rush to Tribal Council without getting the chance to deliberate and agree on a target first.
"We're literally going to head over there, separate them into three boats so they can't talk, go to Tribal, and I'm hoping what that does is set the tone for 'anything can happen.' And it just might. And even if it doesn't, they'll be expecting it to happen," Probst explained.
The host previously revealed hidden Immunity Idols will look different from one another. Some will be beautiful and elaborate while others will appear simple and poorly constructed. The variety will confuse castaways as to which idols are fake vs. legitimate.
"And then when they see an idol and a guy says, 'I swear this is an idol,' and then the other guy goes, 'Yeah! A piece of tin with a hole punched through it,' and he's voted out, they're going to go, 'Oh my God! What's happened to Survivor?!'"
Probst said the point of the game is to really play it and have fun.
