Four months after they went public with their relationship, former The Amazing Race 4 co-winner Reichen Lehmkuhl and former 'N Sync member Lance Bass have announced that they have split up.

"We remain the best of friends," the pair told People in a statement issued Monday afternoon. "Please respect our privacy as we try to work things out during this difficult time."

According to People, speculation that Lehmkuhl and Bass had broken up began when Bass made a Friday night Las Vegas nightclub appearance without Lehmkuhl. Rumors that the relationship was in trouble first began emerging in August, however Bass had denied them. "We are very happy," Bass told People at the time.

Back in July, Bass ended months of media speculation about both the nature of his close relationship with the openly gay former The Amazing Race 4 co-winner and years of public denials that he was gay by "coming out" of the closet and disclosing that he was in a relationship with the 32-year-old reality star. According to Bass, the pair first met when Lehmkuhl served as Bass' real estate agent.

The pair had made countless joint public appearances since Bass publicly revealed his sexual orientation in an exclusive cover story interview in People magazine's July 28 issue. In October, Lehmkuhl told Inside Edition that he and Bass had begun getting threats about Here's What We'll Say: Growing Up, Coming Out, a book about Lehmkuhl's experiences as a gay man in the military.
