"We started out great and it just went downhill," Bret explained. "I'll never make detective because I didn't find those coins!... Croatia kicked our butts."
"But the bromance is still going!" Chris noted.
The Amazing Race broadcast began in Brienz, Switzerland, with former The Amazing Race racers Tyler Oakley and friend Korey Kuhl leaving the previous Pit Stop at 4:19PM.
The teams were instructed to fly southeast to Split, Croatia, and then make their way to Kasjuni Beach, a popular playground in the city where they'd meet up with their travel companion for this leg of the Race, the Travelocity gnome.
The teams had to buy their tickets at the Zurich Airport, and Tyler and Korey and Bret and Chris -- who departed at 4:26PM -- hopped on the first train.
Former The Amazing Race racers Colin Guinn and life partner Christie Woods left in third place at 4:49PM and hopped aboard the second train to the airport with all of the other teams.
Departure times for former Racers Leo Temory and friend Jamal Zadran, former Big Brother houseguests Nicole Franzel and Victor Arroyo, and former Racers Becca Droz and friend Floyd Pierce were not shown.
Tyler and Korey were able to buy tickets for a flight that would stop in Berlin and arrive in Split at 11:20AM, and Bret and Chris purchased the same tickets.
Leo and Jamal, Becca and Floyd, and Colin and Christie booked seats on the next flight out, which would stop in Hamburg and land them in Split at 12:25PM.

The remaining teams then formed two lines at the ticket counter. Although Nicole and Victor were second in line at one counter, Becca and Floyd were served first in the opposite line -- which upset and frustrated Nicole.
Once it became time for Nicole and Victor to buy their tickets, their ticket agent took off. After wasting time trying to find service and finding out all the flight they wanted were booked, they decided to take a risk and wait standby for seats.
If Nicole and Victor got on the flight they were hoping for, it would arrive 10 minutes after the first flight and an hour earlier than the second flight other teams had booked.
Victor was hoping for a miracle, and they got it because they were able to secure seats on the flight arriving at 11:30AM. Victor couldn't believe they went from booking a flight last to third place in the Race.
Meanwhile, Team Fun, The Afghanimals, and Colin and Christie's flight was delayed one hour, so the three teams in the lead lucked out with a huge time advantage.
Bret and Chris were the first team to arrive at the beach bar called Caffe Bar Zbirac, and they were instructed to serve six filled glasses of punch to local sunbathers relaxing on the beach. Once they grabbed their Travelocity gnome and returned the empty trays to the bartender, they'd receive their next clue.
Bret and Chris finished the task quickly and then headed to Marjan Cave Church, where they'd deliver bread to a monk and then receive the leg's Detour clue.

Bret and Chris got to the church in first place and learned they must complete one of two possible Detour tasks: "Poetry In Motion" or "Washed In From The Ocean."
"Poetry In Motion" required teams to go tubing at the beach, but instead of the enjoying the ride, they had to spend the time memorizing a tongue-twisting poem. One wrong pronunciation, and the "poetry master" would send them back for another wild ride.
"Washed In From The Ocean" required teams to become underwater treasure hunters using snorkeling gear and metal detectors. Once they found a golden goblet and five ancient coins, they'd receive their next clue.
Tyler and Korey arrived at the church in second place, and Nicole and Victor were racing in third.
Bret and Chris chose to snorkel, as did Tyler and Korey.
But Chris and Bret quickly learned they were looking for "a needle in a haystack" and the challenge was going to be very difficult.
Both Bret and Tyler said, "This is really hard."
"This is almost impossible. I should've stayed drinking with those guys, is what I should've done," Bret noted.

Nicole and Victor opted to learn some poetry, but they didn't exactly have an easy time with that task either.
After attempting to find treasure for a while, Tyler and Korey decided to switch Detour tasks and try tubing instead.
Meanwhile, Becca and Floyd, Colin and Christie, and Leo and Jamal's flight finally landed in Split one hour and 31 minutes behind schedule. The three teams were desperate to catch up.

Nicole and Victor then finished the Detour task in first place after nailing their poem on their seventh attempt.
The teams' next set of clues told them to travel by taxi to the entrance of Diocletian's Palace and search for their next clue.
Tyler and Korey recited their poem correctly on their fourth try.
Meanwhile, Bret and Chris regretted not switching tasks when Tyler and Korey did, but they felt they had no choice other to give up and go tubing. The guys were disappointed and felt they had screwed themselves.
But after trying one round of tubing, the guys opted to go back and treasure hunt. They acknowledged, once again, they had made the wrong decision.

Becca and Floyd were shown making it to the Detour task in fourth place, and they were followed by Leo and Jamal in fifth place and finally Colin and Christie in sixth place.
Becca and Floyd and Leo and Jamal chose to learn the poem and go for the bumpy ride on the ocean, while Colin and Christie searched for treasure.
Bret and Chris saw Colin and Christie arrive, so they were relieved because the guys figured the life partners would have an equally difficult time discovering the coins.
But it didn't take long for both teams to decide to do "Poetry In Motion." (Yes, Bret and Chris agreed they should switch tasks -- again).
Becca and Floyd recited their poem correctly on their fourth attempt and jumped into third place. After Leo and Jamal got their poem wrong after 10 tries, Colin and Christie got it right on their fourth attempt and jumped into fourth place.

Bret and Chris passed the test on their tenth try.
Once Tyler and Korey arrived at the church in first place, they learned it was time for one member of each team to complete a Roadblock task.

For the Roadblock, the participating Racers had to keep track of five Roman soldiers who had red ribbons around their helmets are they covered themselves up with their shields. The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan said it was "tricky" because the soldiers would basically disappear.
On their way to the church, Colin and Christie realized they had left their roaming gnome at the beach, and so they had to go back to grab it.
The order in which the rest of the teams arrived at the church was as follows: Nicole and Victor, Becca and Floyd, Leo and Jamal, Colin and Christie, and finally Bret and Chris.
Korey attempted the Roadblock task and was later followed by Nicole, Floyd, Leo, Christie, and Bret.
Korey and Nicole decided to work together because they really struggled with the task, and they finished the task at the same time.
Floyd seemingly nailed the memory task on his first attempt, explaining how he was trained to notice small details within a large group because of his history in a marching band.
Leo and Christie then finished the task simultaneously, leaving Bret and Chris in last place.
The teams' next set of clues instructed them to head to the oldest port in Croatia and race to Matejuska at Split Harbor across the bay. But in order to get there, they had to row a dingy.

Nicole and Korey completed the leg seconds later in second place. Becca and Floyd finished the leg in third place.
Colin and Christie ran to the Pit Stop mat in fourth place, and Leo and Jamal were right behind them in fifth place.
Bret and Chris eventually met Phil in sixth -- and last -- place, and they just admitted it wasn't their day.
"We just didn't make good decisions today," Chris said, adding that The Amazing Race was challenging but also "rewarding" and his friendship with Bret will "last forever."
