"I'm trying really hard to stay open-minded," Gerry told People.
"Because something may look like a red flag on its surface, but when you explore it a little bit further, you might find that it's not a problem at all."
The 72-year-old retired restaurateur, however, went on to list his real dealbreakers.
Gerry said he "would not date a smoker," and the Iowa native -- who currently lives on a lake in Indiana -- admitted he would be reluctant to commit to a woman when there's a "serious geographical obstacle" in the way.
In terms of what he's looking for in his forever partner, The Golden Bachelor star said there are "many things that are valuable" to him.
"I think sense of humor ranks very high, and if that sense of humor extends to where they can laugh at themselves, that's even better," Gerry explained.
"And I think I need to see strong family values, something that's similar to my own."
Gerry also desires a woman who will challenge him and call him out when necessary.
"Compatibility to me means that if I'm doing something that maybe my partner doesn't 100 percent feel good about, that she knows how to bring me down and put me on the right path," The Golden Bachelor star shared, "and that I can do the same for her."

On Night 1 of The Golden Bachelor, Gerry gave his First Impression Rose to Faith Martin and eliminated six bachelorettes, including former The Bachelor star Matt James' mother Patty James.
Gerry recently revealed to BachelorNation.com that he's very confident in the decisions he had made throughout The Golden Bachelor process.
"I don't have any regrets about the decisions I made," Gerry said in late September. "I was as slow and deliberate as I could possibly be."
But Gerry acknowledged that his choices were "very difficult to implement" throughout the show, especially towards the end of filming.
"[It was] very emotional," Gerry noted.
In fact, Gerry previously told Entertainment Weekly that saying goodbye to one or more women every week was extremely tough.
"I cried like a baby," Gerry confessed. "With each Rose Ceremony, [host] Jesse Palmer looked at me with more and more concern, because it really felt like the weight of the world was on my chest a couple of times."
Gerry recalled, "I remember walking out of the mansion during one of the Rose Ceremonies and bending over because I really felt like I couldn't catch my breath."

While The Golden Bachelor fans will have to wait to find out if Gerry is currently dating someone or maybe even engaged, Gerry hinted to EW that he's happy and content with how the show ended.
"This is a great day, isn't it?" Gerry said last month, suggesting he may currently be in love. "I'm so pleasantly surprised by how things ended."
Gerry signed up to be The Golden Bachelor after losing his high school sweetheart and late wife, Toni Turner, to complications from a bacterial infection in 2017.
The pair had been married for 43 years and welcomed two daughters, Angie and Jenny, together. Gerry also has two granddaughters, Charlee and Payton, and lives on a beautiful lake in Indiana.
