In an apparent on-air acknowledgement that at least some of the alleged MTV reality show wasn't real, last night's broadcast of The Hills series finale ended by showing a portion of the show's final scene had been faked on the lot of a Hollywood studio.

"Brody and I were speechless when we filmed the finale," Kristin Cavallari told People about the scene, which featured Cavallari and purported ex-boyfriend Brody Jenner saying goodbye and Jenner watching Cavallari's town car drive away before the Hollywood hills background behind Jenner was revealed to be a fake stage background as the camera panned back and showed him on studio backlot with Cavallari and her car parked nearby.

"We couldn't have asked for a better ending. Producers probably knew the cast would reveal secrets, and it's better to be in on the joke than to look like an idiot. I couldn't be happier."

The backlot revelation occurred after the scene resumed following a brief video montage of The Hills highlights.  Prior to the montage, Cavallari and Jenner had been shown filming the scene outside Cavallari's home, with passing street traffic visible.

"Well the thing is, kinda, as you saw in the [final scene] -- what's real and what's fake?  You don't know, our relationship the entire time could have been fake," Jenner said during an appearance with Cavallari on The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending, a live reunion show that immediately followed MTV's broadcast of the finale.

"Ha-ha!" Cavallari added.

"It's one of those things, we could have been friends all along, you just don't know," Jenner said.  "That's one of the questions that was always asked  -- is it real or is it fake?  And we kind of left you with, 'Well you'll never know what was real and what was fake.'

"You'll never know... it's your own interpretation," Cavallari said.  "I think we both couldn't have been happier with the ending.  When we filmed it we were speakless because we didn't know what to make of it."

Jenner was more direct in a post-show interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest.

"No, it wasn't.  It really wasn't.  Me and Kristin are really close friends, we love each other very much, but that relationship was absolutely false," he replied when asked whether his The Hills romance with Cavallari was real.

"Our friendship is real, but as far as us hooking up or being together, I mean it wasn't hard to kiss her -- she's a very beautiful girl -- but with this kind of show, you just don't know what's real and what's fake.  And that's kind of how we left it."

"That was the No. 1 question with the show, 'Is it real?  What's real, what's fake?'  But we still kind of messed with everybody's head and did that with the ending so you don't really know what was real and what was fake," he continued.

"If you can put the ending together with all the interviews that I've been doing, I think that you can figure it out," Cavallari added.

While The Hills creator and former MTV executive Adam DiVello has previously acknowledged some show scenes are "a little fake" to put them in context, the network and most of The Hills cast and crew had previously repeatedly denied allegations that the show, which premiered in 2006, wasn't real despite numerous evidence to the contrary.

However Cavallari -- who only joined The Hills last year for its final two seasons -- has repeatedly claimed the show was fake.

"I pretty much do anything they have me do because I don't care.  I mean, we're filming a TV show. Let's make it interesting. Let's have a good time with it," she told The Los Angeles Times last year.

"It's just so... fake. There's no truth to it. At all."

She reiterated those claims to People.

"Nothing you see on TV is real," Cavallari said.  "Fans need to understand it's all entertainment. It’s all in fun. I would never put my close friends or a real relationship on a show."

In addition, Cavallari also recently confirmed she has been dating Miguel Medina, a cameraman for The Hills.

"Is that part of the show or is that real?" Ryan Seacrest asked Cavallari during an appearance on his KIIS-FM radio show last month.

"That's not part of the show," she replied. "You know, I'm dating and I think that's all I'm going to say about that."
