"Glory to God tonight...I couldn't be more proud. What a tough thing to pull off and we did it! I am so blessed!!!" the fourth-season American Idol winner tweeted Thursday night.
The live three-hour Sound of Music Live event was an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical rather than a remake of the famous 1965 movie starring the iconic Julie Andrews, 78, as Maria.
The Sound of Music Live featured the same plot as the film with some twists and changes in the musical numbers. Underwood played an aspiring nun who leaves the abbey and becomes a governess for the widower Captain von Trapp's seven children. Set in pre-WWII Austria, Underwood's character falls helplessly in love with the Captain played by True Blood star Stephen Moyer and his tight-buttoned kids.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Underwood was the producers' "first choice for the role" of Maria.

The live television broadcast was a huge ratings success for NBC.
With 18.470 million viewers overall, The Sound of Music Live delivered NBC's best Thursday average, excluding sports, since the network aired the series finale of Frasier in Spring 2004. The musical hit also gave the network its best non-sports performance in the Adults 18-49 demographic since ER's series finale aired in Spring 2009.
