In the Four Chair Challenge, dubbed "a cross between Musical Chairs and a Roman Coliseum" by The X Factor creator and mentor Simon Cowell, a category's artists perform one at a time on an "X"-shaped stage, and the category's mentor must choose whether to give each singer a temporary seat on the stage or immediately send him or her home.
As the Four Chair Challenge progresses, the mentors must decide whether to replace one of their already-seated acts with a subsequent new act -- or eliminate that act entirely. Once all of a category's artists perform, the last four people sitting in the chairs ultimately survived the cut.
Thursday night's broadcast picked up right where Wednesday's episode had left off, with Demi already having placed the following artists in a seat: Bree Randall, a 20-year-old from Corona, CA; Khaya Cohen, a 16-year-old from New York, NY; Jamie Pineda, a 24-year-old from Fall River Mills, CA; and Ashly Williams, a 24-year-old from Los Angeles, CA.
Simone, a 19-year-old from Port Jefferson Station, NY, then sang and Demi chose to give her Bree's seat -- therefore sending Bree home.
Danie was up next. After performing, Demi chose to give her a seat and replace Simone.
Rylie Brown, a 15-year-old from Lee's Summit, MO, then took the stage, after which Demi immediately decided to send her home.
Afterward, Primrose Martin, a 20-year-old from Las Vegas, NV, performed, but Demi eliminated her right away.
Rion sang for the live audience next. Demi gave her Ashly's seat.
Lastly, Ellona performed. Demi wanted her in the "Girls" final four, so she sent Jamie home and gave her a seat on the stage.
Now that Demi has joined Kelly Rowland in determining her final four artists, next week's The X Factor broadcasts will feature Paulina Rubio weeding out her "Boys" artists and Simon choosing amongst his "Groups" acts.
The Four Chair Challenge Round will continue on through Wednesday, October 9 and conclude on Thursday, October 10. At that point, only 16 acts will remain.
