Spelling was born into wealth as the daughter of Aaron Spelling, a famous Hollywood producer. In her career, she's starred in Oxygen's Tori & Dean: Inn Love and Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, designed a jewelry line, and also hosted Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings for the network.
"And then there's my shopping problem. I've bought ridiculous amounts of stuff for the kids, clothing, toys, crafts. We've traveled... I can't afford to live like [I'm rich] anymore. Our circumstances have changed. They say admitting the problem is the first step," added Spelling.
Spelling and McDermott -- who reportedly wants a vasectomy, which costs anywhere from $350 to $1,000, but can't afford one -- have been trying to budget their money and change their excessive spending habits since they have five children in the family: Liam, 6, Stella, 5, Hattie, 2, Finn 14 months, and McDermott's son Jack, 15, from a previous marriage.
"I haven't bought a purse in three years and it's fine. I look back on that girl who shopped at Gucci in my 20s, and I can't even relate. I can't believe I thought it was important," Spelling told People in its November 4 issue.
It's been about one year since Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood was canceled by Oxygen due to low ratings, but the couple is apparently looking forward to their new show on HGTV, Tori & Dean: Cabin Fever, which will premiere in Spring 2014.
"We don't have a series on the air right now, so we have to be more restrictive of what we can spend, just like anyone who doesn't currently have a steady job," Spelling explained.
"We're in the entertainment business and things change year to year... We're all about repurposing. It's a really good value to have."
Spelling, 40, and McDermott, 46, wed in 2006 and welcomed their first child together in March 2007.
