Troy Aikman apparently won't be following in the ballroom footsteps of former Dallas Cowboys teammates Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin and competing on Dancing with the Stars after all.

Aikman has clarified that he was just joking when he told TMZ he would be competing on Dancing with the Stars next year while leaving a Los Angeles restaurant on Wednesday night.

"Heavens, no," Aikman told The Dallas Morning News in an email on Thursday.

Aikman also reiterated he had been joking -- and continued doing so -- in a Thursday posting on Twitter.

"I will not be on DWTS... interferes with American Idol auditions," he joked.

TMZ had reported on Aikman's purported Dancing with the Stars announcement on Thursday morning and included video of his entire exchange with a videographer working for the celebrity news website.

"Will you be doing Dancing with the Stars anytime soon?" the videographer asked as Aikman waited for his car outside the Red O restaurant.

"Yeah, I am.  Yeah, next year," Aikman replied.

"Are you really?" the videographer asked again.

"Yeah," Aikman said.

"Who do you hope you get as a partner?" the TMZ rep asked.

"I don't know the partners," he replied.

"Julianne Hough, ask for her!" the rep suggested.

Smith competed on Dancing with the Stars' Fall 2006 third season, which he won with professional partner Cheryl Burke.  Irvin competed on Dancing with the Stars' ninth season in Fall 2009, however he was eliminated during the competition's seventh week.

Aikman, Smith and Irvin lead the Cowboys to three Super Bowls championships in the 1990's, causing them to be dubbed the "Triplets."
