"It didn't make sense to stay together," an insider told Us, adding that their union "wasn't a marriage."
The couple announced they had decided to part ways on December 1, saying they just grew apart but will continue to love and respect each other.
During a Tuesday Watch What Happens Live interview with Andy Cohen, Yolanda admitted she'll "treasure" her "beautiful love story" with David forever.
"Unfortunately it was not strong enough to withstand the circumstances that came our way," Yolanda, who has three children, explained.
Yolanda was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2012, only one year after tying the knot, and it's been an uphill battle for her ever since.
"Chronic long-term illness is extremely challenging, not only for the person that's sick, but also for the caregiver," Yolanda confessed. "It for sure changed the dynamic of our relationship."
"The truth is that we both worked through the difficult time through the best of our ability," the reality TV star continued. "So rather than judging what went wrong, I pick to honor the great times that we shared in the last nine years. There were a wealth of good times."
Sources previously told Us that Yolanda and David's marriage became "rocky" right after she became sick.
"Yolanda's entire life has become her bedroom," one source said. "She has basically been sick since they first got married."
"She just felt he wasn't there for her when she needed him most and he felt the same," another insider told the magazine earlier this month. "It's so sad, but the illness really did come between them."
On a brighter note, Yolanda is doing much better health-wise in recent days.

"I have about 60 percent better brain function than I did in the last year," she reportedly told Cohen. "I can still only live and plan one day at a time. The exciting thing is watching the episodes and inspiring me, and I could see the progress that I have made. I am excited and grateful for that. I will continue to fight for a full recovery."
Yolanda shares two daughters, models Gigi, 20, and Bella, 19, and a son, Anwar Hadid, 16, with her first husband Mohamed Hadid, a real estate entrepreneur whom she had been hitched to from 1994 to 2000. David has five daughters from his prior marriages to Linda Thompson, Rebecca Dyer and B.J. Cook.
